a slow fade to dark, as the flame starts to falter
and the wick burns low, into browned, frayed ends.
with a puff and a plume, the darkness engulfs
every inch of this room, so steeped in my fears.
i exhale at last,
my tension abating,
relief traverses my face.
such expressions unseen, my demeanor transformed
all but the closest could be none the wiser.
for this candle’s burnt out, and its burden of light
can be passed to another man’s shoulders.
wading through vestiges
of the fragments of self,
i seek shelter and solace
from this world to be seen
through the narrow, dark lenses
of such tired, sad eyes.
and as memories streak
and loom overhead,
like aurora, the lights,
emblazed in the sky,
there’s a struggle for form,
patterns: elusive,
and whatever i seek
lacks definition at best.
but there’s comfort in this,
the abstract and blurred,
there’s room for hope
to fuel imagination
and blur wonderful dreams
with pragmatic reality.

punch for bloody punch,
toe to nimble toe,
even heartbeats synchronise
and beat in time
with the rhythm of the fight.

glare for piercing glare,
the blood pumps thicker
and the pain is dull
when passion backs the punch.
to take this fight to bloody ground?
to walk away unscathed?
the choice is mine,
but boiling blood
seems to speak for me tonight.
